Gender, Culture and the Media Essay Example for Free

Gender, Culture and the Media Essay Media, in the context required, is a term used to define an interactive transmission that is visualized and then especially designed to reach a large audience, for e. g. a whole nation. These audiences, however, are very different from one another, depending on their culture and gender identities. The variance in culture and sexual identities, have an obvious impact on media which is why there is a dire need for exploring the relationship between the two. The most important tool in exploring and understanding the relationship between media and culture is communication. This is because communication plays a very effective role in the manner through which interaction is carried out with the masses (Gaunlett, 2002). For this purpose, extreme emphasis is given to the cultural differences that may occur. Such is the case of international campaigns or chains of restaurants; whenever they want to promote any product, they have to consider the differences, and keeping these differences in mind, they alter their product accordingly for e. g. , McDonalds in India, do not usually serve their people beef burgers as cow is sacred to them. Likewise, Indian people can relate more to it than others who are just viewing this product on an Indian channel. On this note, I would like to add that it is also a TV channel’s responsibility to be aware of the ethics with regard to culture. Although, media is known to show us situation and relationships from other people’s point-of-view, the impact is originated from a certain culture or social class, for that matter. However, it has been changing from time to time with the global development. So, we can say that the relationship between media and gender today, is different from how it was years ago. The reason is because people’s thought have changed in the passing years, the role models have changed and the attitudes of people have changed, which without doubt influences media. It is for these contemporary audiences that the media has to alter whatever it promotes, in the manner that is much acceptable to them. The rest is mere perception on the audience’s part. Talking about the perception of various people and how they interact with things like talk shows, MTV, the Internet, soap operas, television sitcoms, dramatic series etc. , it is very likely to notice that the people interact with the media on the basis of their culture and gender identities (Dines, 2008). An example is that of Lorillard’s Newport cigarettes, introduced in 1957, which after its struggle period in the early stages of introduction, became very popular with the African American crowd. Another comment on the same example is that Newport cigarettes contain menthol, which is supposed to be associated with women mostly. Relating this with media, the advertisements for this brand also focused on African American people in the beginning, as they had identified them as their target market. With the change in society and changing views of people, Newport gained its market recognition and broadened their target market and today it owns a most coveted place in the tobacco industry. In the society that we live in today, people dedicate a lot of time to television, magazines, surfing the net, and other publications. As a result, it is very inevitable to say that they come across culture and advertising almost everyday. Among these people, a large segment belongs to the younger generation, who are particularly sensitive and relatively effected much easily by the same. Childhood culture is an inter-textual universe which connects TV programs to movies, videogames, toys, T-shirts, shoes, games, crayons, coloring books, bed linens and towels, pencil cases, lunch boxes etc. This is where the impact part comes into play, which media has on children and that which the children have on the media (Geertz, 1977). One of the greatest impacts of the above stated example on media is that when a television program (for kids) is produced, a lot of things have to be taken into consideration. Not too much violence, abusive language or false imagery should be used. As far as sexual identity is concerned, men and women have different views, likes and dislikes, regarding different things. Women are more likely to read magazines like Gourmet, Culinary Trends, Bon Appetite, Food and Wine etc. Lately, men have also developed a similar trend in reading magazines but there choices are those like Extreme Sports, Chicago Sports, and Sports Illustration etc. Another aspect is that of men leading the global scene. When it comes to voiceovers, men dominate, regardless of the product. Men continue to work in their late ages on screen whereas women tend to disappear in their late thirties. Facial lines and grey hair are considered to be signs of maturity in males, while the same would pronounce females ‘old’ and not fit for TV (Buikema, 2009). On the other hand, it is also reported to have said that with the developing sense of equality with regard to sexes, the Times magazine cover wondered if feminism was dead in June 1998. To sum up, the media shows us situations and relationships from other people’s point-of-view and we begin to think that we can now see ‘how the world works’, in lives other than our own. Soap-operas showing how neighbors, friends and lovers interact with each other are not behaviors that the media has created by itself. It is the likes of people that have affected media to follow the same. That too, varies from culture to culture. Some counties believe in open cultures while others observe closed culture where too much intimacy and involvement is not look upon as appropriate. People claim that the reference points for them are film and TV but actually it’s the way round- people, their cultures and genders influence upon the way they interact with the media. Aliens Built the Pyramids Essay -- essays research papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Aliens built the Egyptian pyramids. Recent research supports the theory that the Pyramids were built long before humans inhabited the area now known as Egypt. It is also nearly impossible for the Egyptians to have lifted and moved the limestone brick used to build these massive structures. Only a more advanced form of life could have constructed such an enormous undertaking, while using advanced mathematics and geography that were not yet known to ancient peoples.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Archeologists suggest that the large stones used in building the pyramids were transported by rolling them over logs or a wet, slippery, clay surface. These methods may have been effective in moving the blocks close to the building site, but do not explain how the massive bricks, weighing as much as a Ford F250 truck, were lifted on top of each other.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When the Great Pyramids at Giza were built, the Egyptians had not invented the wheel yet, but the limestone blocks that they grudgingly transported, in an effort to build pyramids, weighed about 2 tons each. If all of the stone from the pyramids was cut into one foot, square blocks, it would extend two thirds of the way around the earth. No human life forms could have possibly erected these structures using that much limestone, because they did not have the technology to work in such scale. Only aliens, with more advanced mechanical and mental abilities, could have designed and ...

Truman Show Essay

Peter Weirs 1998 film The Truman Show is a metaphor for modern society, it focuses on the way the media manipulates reality. We are complicit in that manipulation and also victims of it. The film challenges us to critique the media and extricate ourselves from the â€Å"reality† it surrounds us with. The Truman Show tells us about life and reality, it portrays from what is real and what is a fantasy. Truman’s world is somewhat like our own world because of the way things are perceived and approached. Everyone expects and wants a true reality and build things around a world that we all seem to want and truly believe in.This is a similar case to what Christof seemingly tried to create, however it was more forced and mannered compared to what the worlds view and society’s form of a world would be like. We all expect things to be perfect; however nothing can be too perfect. There has always got to be imperfections or something going wrong. In a way we are set up, nat urally you’re always going to want something, but when you see something better you want that instead; it’s the same with wanting things that you can never get. The concept is the same. It’s that lust of just wanting to be accepted into the world accordingly to what society approves of, just that feeling of wanting to be accepted into the world. In Truman’s case, everything was controlled. From staging to lighting, friendships, and relationships and just how absolutely everything was set out. It was a manifested stage; the perfect little world where everything was always right. In our world, reality; we try and make it the same, however things don’t go our way all the time which causes the little caresses in time and change, completely flipping a scenario around therefore causing things to go unexpected. Not as planned and not as we have hoped. We are controlled by forces that we cannot handle such as the push and gravitational pull. The earthâ€℠¢s atmosphere and weather, our love and emotions. Little things like this that has such a big impact into the world; our world and our reality. The media plays a big role in both our world and Truman’s world. We are impacted by it every day and most don’t seem to notice. We rely on it a lot and we all seem to revolve around the media always wondering and dependent so we know what to expect next. The media plays an important role in The Truman Show because it is a set up world. The way that Christof has made it to be, to advertise to the viewers watching his show. Almost every way that it is staged out, there is a product being sold or just the way that they talk to each other is fake, you can tell that it’s been scripted and Truman is really only oblivious to this because he chose to believe that this is his real world and this is what it is made out to be until he has suspicions into what is really occurring. In our world, the media somewhat plays a similar part. We rely on it to get our information. It can be used for good and bad. There really is not telling in what to expect next coming from the media as they are so unexpected and mysterious. As it is, we are a lot like the viewers of the Truman show because we support the media industry. We are keeping the industry going by encouraging it and egging it to go on. The media is our form of entertainment and it’s almost our crucial bit of daily medicine, like we must take some in each day in order to survive and go on.We rely on the media as much as it relies on us to keep it running. In modern society we accept whatever goes on and most of the time approve and agree of whatever the media is saying, posting or filming; either broadcasting online or offline. It has become so relevant in our world and especially to this generation. We are like the viewers of the Truman Show because whatever the media plays, and we watch it is just another form of entertainment for us and the peopleâ₠¬â„¢s lives that they intrude on is merely a form of enjoyment to our eyes.

Ceremonies of Possession by Patricia Seed Essay - 1673 Words

Alysha Kurani In Patricia Seed’s Ceremonies of Possession in the Europe’s Conquest of the New World: 1492-1640, several different â€Å"possession methods† were displayed from the different groups that conquered the new world. Ranging from artwork, to astrological maps, to a reading of submission, each group devised their own technique when claiming a new land. Physical demarkation was the main practice the English used to symbolize the ownership of new land. The methods they used to mark such territory were the building of houses, gardens, and constructing fences. Houses created a legal right to the land. As declared by Seed, â€Å" building the first house was critical to the initial stages of English settlement in the first place because†¦show more content†¦It had very specific instructions and everything had to be done by protocol. It had to be read aloud and acknowledged by the natives. The Requirement stated that if rules were not followed and th e natives would not yield to the Spanish authority then they would be warred upon. As said in Chapter 3, â€Å"It set the aims of warfare not as mere surrender, but as submission to the Catholicism and its legitimate representative, the Spaniards.† Thus, the spoken speech was focal point in Spanish conquest. â€Å"It â€Å"requires† that the indigenous peoples of the new world acknowledge the church as superior of the world and therefore consent to have priests preach to them.† The speech then goes on to give a written disclaimer that if anyone were to not follow these guidelines they were subject to death that they themselves brought upon them. The Spanish also used taxes as a form of submission and humiliation to conquer new worlds. This came from the influences of â€Å"jizya-inspired Moslem and Jewish tribute payments to Christian rulers.† Under Christian rule the wealthy communities paid in cash while the poorer communities paid in hard labor. Althou gh, eventually, natives would merge into Spanish society they were never thought of as actual Spanish citizens they were thought of as subjects living under Spanish rule. Commitment and Work Engagement of Public †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Commitment and Work Engagement of Public. Answer: Introduction Organization development refers to the successful change in an organizational performance. However, in an organization change is required to influence the worker behavior and motivation process. In order to bring development in an existing system, change is crucial in an organization. Chang is associated with the improvement of knowledge management, learning process and organizational values and norms (Woodcock, 2017). Organizational development is associated with the ongoing systematic process to implement effective change in the organizational system. This study deals with the organizational development in the context of IGA store, which is a U.S based grocery store. Organizational developmental needs focus on the requirements to meet the future needs of an organization. However, IGA is a U.S based grocery stores and it is operating in many small towns of various countries. In Australia IGA has stores and it is operating as a franchise. In the recent years, huge competition is the major issue for IGA in the global market as well as in Australian supermarket segment. Aldi and Woolworths are the major competitors of IGA in Australian grocery market (News.com.au, 2017). In order to compete in the global market, IGA needs organizational development. To understand the business developmental needs in the organization To make a plan to give shape the developmental needs To take necessary actions to implement the organization developmental needs in IGA store Skill development need is one of the major needs of organizational development. In order to gain competitive advantages, it is crucial for an organization to identify the training need of the staffs (Bolman Deal, 2017). In the context of IGA store, they are facing huge competition in the global market. For this reason, they need to improve the knowledge of the employees and enhance their learning ability. However, training includes workshops, general management training, and conduction of the learning program to understand the skill gaps of the employees. IGA needs to invest to establish the learning needs to achieve a better outcome from their business. Organization of the training in a planned process will be helpful for IGA to meet the learning needs of the employees. One of the most important skills that need to develop is the communication skill. However, the training process within the IGA should focus on the development of the communication skill of their staffs. This will he lp the staffs to focus on the effective communication with the customers to enhance their marketing process. In order to identify the organizational development it is important for IGA to conduct an external audit by the help of audit agencies. Such external agencies will be helpful to reveal the exact needs of the organizational development. Product innovation is crucial to gain competitive advantages in the international market (Baumgartner Rauter, 2017). However, IGA is a grocery store and offers a variety of grocery products to the customers. Hence, bringing innovation in the product feature will make them unique in the global market and lead them to achieve significant success in the business. Product innovation is associated with the analysis of different kinds of information to understand each element of the product development (Serrat, 2017). In the context of IGA, product innovation enables them to carry out market research, target market analysis, identification of the customer preference, use of technology and assessing the manufacturing capabilities. Those ensure the organizational development. Innovation in the food products like in the drink, which is an essential part of the daily life, will be helpful for IGA to improve their business. Production of organic dink will be a new innovation for this organizat ion, which can enhance its business in the global market and the customer domain that are health conscious. Involvement of the third party will be helpful to identify the skill based activity. However, audit process via external agencies will be helpful to reveal the efficiency of the skill of the employees within IGA. Development of the work process Work process analysis is another need for organizational development as it allows the organization to bring change in the operation process (Serrat, 2017). Measuring the quality control process will increase the efficiency and accuracy of the work. In order to analyze the work process KPI will be helpful for IGA (Key performance indicator). This will be effective to measure the performance of the employees during their work. Review of the existing practice and implement of the new policy regarding the workplace are vital for the organizational development (Woodcock, 2017). However, IGA focuses on the good quality food and they try to offer quality food at a reasonable rate. Hence, adoption of the environmental sustainability policy will be effective for such organization to provide service with environment information. This may help them to achieve sustainable development in their business. In order review the existing business process proper monitoring by creating proper documentation will be required. On the other hand, IGA should analyze the business process by reviewing the product outputs, profit margins and performance analysis. Communication plan is an important change management technique. However, it will help IGA to motivate the employees and to implement changes in an organization. Establishing a change management framework and collection of the authentic data is important for the implementation of change (Van der Voet Vermeeren, 2017). Collection of the data enables IGA to find the risk, competition, and opportunity in the current market. Force field analysis highlights the change problem in order to tackle them. On the other hand, culture mapping and devise a project plan are crucial, as culture mapping will help IGA to establish it organizational value, norms and practice while project plan gives an idea of new change management. Four main forms of the consultative process For IGA it is important to give information to in consultative process as it will help the stakeholders to understand the change management process. This will allow the employees to identify the areas which need to be improved. On the other hand, information needs to gather from market research and collaborative work is required to implement changes in the organizational development of IGA. Apart from this, the involvement of the stakeholders in the decision-making proves will be effective to enhance the consultative process. Providing empowerment to the employees is an effective process to involve the stakeholders in the decision making process (Ezeuduji, 2017). Employees waste their valuable time to fight each other in the workplace. Thus, for IGA it is crucial to manage the conflict in the workplace to increase the productivity. On the other hand, often the misunderstanding occurs between the management and the employees that hamper the workflow in an organization. Hence, conflict management will establish a good communication between the employees and the management of IGA. Conflict management also helps the business managers to establish a good relationship between the employees and the management. This will enhance the efficiency of the work and is effective for the organization to meet the business goal (Ashkanasy Dorris, 2017). Work division is one of the main principles of Fayols that highlights if the employees are specialized for a particular work then their working efficiency will be increased (Ehrhart Kuenzi, 2017). For IGA it is crucial for the employees to maintain the discipline in the workplace as it is required for the organizational development. Unity of direction is another important principle of Fayols that will allow the employees to work on the same objectives under the direction of one manager. Remuneration will be effective for IGA to satisfy their employees as employee satisfaction is closely related to organizational development. Maintenance of the equity in the workplace is required for IGA, as managers of this organization should fair with their employees to increase their efficiency. Application of Fayols management principles will be effective for IGA to develop a positive work culture in their organization. Therefore, this will be act as an effective tool for the employee motivation . Role of new legislations in affecting the process IGA is a multinational company hence, in order to get new entry, a new market of a foreign country needs the green signal from the government. On the other hand, the introduction of the new regulation by the Australian government may resist the organizational development as well as the implementation of the new change in IGA stores. However, often government introduces special tax in the foreign business. This will create difficulties for IGA to expand their business outside of their own country (Rofcanin, Las Heras Bakker, 2017). Adhocracy culture is an important type of organizational culture as it provides a dynamic environment in the workplace. In this culture, a long-term goal has been established to create new resources (Ashkanasy Dorris, 2017). Market culture is another effective organizational culture. In this culture, the employees become competitive and focus on their targeted goal. Hierarchy culture focuses on the structured environment of an organization Coordination is the main aim of such culture. Clan culture is a friendly organizational culture focuses on the tradition and the loyalty. This culture aims to develop the long-term human resources. However, in this organizational culture, the needs of the customer is defined and effective service is provided. Normative culture highlights strict regulation in the workplace. However, the employees have to comply with the organizational policies in a proper way. Therefore, Academy culture includes high skilled employees. However, this culture leads t he employees to feel respected in their workplace (Van der Voet Vermeeren, 2017). Increased training is the major aim of such culture. In the context of IGA they should follow clan culture as it will enable them to understand the customer need, which is crucial to bring development to the organization. By following the clan culture IGA will be able to enhance their customer loyalty. This will enable them to meet the needs of the current market and also allows them to retain the existing customer and get new customers. Organizational developmental plan for IGA The aim of the organisational developmental plan is to gain competitive advantage and in the long run become the market leader and in order to achieve this plan some of the points that have to be considered are: Emphasis on skill and performance development of the employees. One of the major strategies is to develop a training program to develop the skill of the employees (Sides, 2017). Conduction of the workshop will be helpful for IGA to enhance the training program. The focus of the company will be to encourage and develop a process of product and service innovation. Innovation and adapting to the changes of the business environment is one of the ways in which a company can gain competitive advantage in the industry. With the help of market research the company can understand the needs and requirements of the consumers and develop products and services accordingly. This will also guide the company in creating new features which will be more users friendly and aligned with the requirements and feedbacks received from the consumers (Mitchell, 2013). The company can incorporate models and theories of operational management in order to increase the efficiency and the performance level of the company, resource allocation should also be effective and should comply with the companys objective. Six sigma or lean production should be implemented by the organisation. Another step that the company should take in order to develop and grow in the industry is to incorporate sustainable measures in the decision and policy making process of the company. This will help the company build a good reputation among the stakeholders. Burke-litwins organisational development theory In this theory he has explained that there are two types of changes that are prevalent in an organisation: First order change- He explains that these are the changes in an organisation that leads to other changes as well. The changes that take place in this process can be divided in two categories transactional change and organisational climate Second order change- these are the changes in an organisation which takes place due to changes that take place fundamentally. This leads to transformational changes in the organisational as well as changes in the organisational culture (Stone, 2015) Conclusion IGA is a grocery store, which requires developmental plan to achieve the competitive advantages in the global market. It has been observed that the company requires skilled labors; hence this is the first step that is required to be taken towards organisation development. This will improve the existing skill of the employees and allow them to compete in the global market. On the other hand, product innovation will enable this organization to make their business unique in the international market. However, for this reason, a particular market research is required. Apart from this organizational operation percess needs to be improved to bring a good working culture in this organization. Financial resources and workforce are required to be managed in a proper way. The development plan that has been described above is a combination of the two types of changes that are discussed in the theory produced by Burke-Litwin. References Ashkanasy, N. M., Dorris, A. B.
